Ep. #58
ORIGINAL AIR DATE: Jun. 15Th, 2015
SONG: Yes, “The Jam Song”, and “Do It For Her”
SYNOPSIS: Connie wants to learn swordfighting and Pearl is the perfect Gem to teach her.

Now that all three of the main Gems have a new look, Steven Universe officially has a second credit opener. If the first one was soft and reflective of the calm sunny days of Beach City, the second is a jaunty tone that represents the larger narrative and the changes the characters have evolved into since. I especially like Connie’s progression from a shy girl clutching her book to her chest protectively to an energetic ball of cute holding a book in one hand and Rose’s sword in another.

Steven and Connie lend Greg a hand in organizing his vinyl collection. The man may struggle with his car washing business, but his musical knowledge is second to none. Connie is unfamiliar with any of them, so Greg puts one in his record player so they can jam out. Steven and Connie are so into it that they fuse into Stevonnie right in front of Greg. Connie begs Greg not to tell her parents because they don’t know about her magical activities. Greg is taken back, but is supportive, being the only other human who can understand her perspective when it comes to the Crystal Gems. When Steven asks for clarification, Greg regales them with another story of his youthful days with those Magical Rock Ladies.

Steven Universe – Episode 62 “Chille Tid”

Ep. #62
ORIGINAL AIR DATE: Jun. 19Th, 2015
SYNOPSIS: Steven introduces the concept of dreams to the Crystal Gems.

Another night, another search mission. The Crystal Gems are in the middle of the ocean looking for Malachite. Poor Steven is worried about Lapis Lazuli while Garnet is concerned Malachite is one ticking time bomb away from destroying the world. Their fusion is unstable, barely held together by their anger and mistrust. If one of them overtakes the other, then Malachite’s rage will consume her body and we can all just kiss Beach City good-bye. They stop for the night though as Steven is slowly starting to drift off to Dreamland. The rest of the Crystal Gems can barely stand, so Steven advises them to take a rest, too. None of the Gems need sleep, so the concept is lost on them, so Steven decides to host a sleepover and give the Crystal Gems the snoozing experience. Garnet encourages Pearl and Amethyst to give it a try while she heads back to the ocean for another round.

Steven Universe – Episode 63 “Cry For Help”

Ep. #63
ORIGINAL AIR DATE: Jul. 13th, 2015
SONG: Yes, “Tower of Mistakes”
SYNOPSIS: Garnet and Pearl form Sardonyx in order to destroy Peridot’s communication tower with disastrous results.

Oh boy, this episode. If I had to pick a Steven Bomb that I felt was the most emotionally compromising, it would be this: the week of Sardonyx. There have been other Steven Bombs that tore me into a million pieces, but “Cry for Help” was one of the first to really go out of its way to rip my heart out and repeatedly stomp on it. Even with tearjerkers like “Lion 3: Straight to Video” and “Rose’s Scabbard”, I was not prepared.

Steven Universe – Episode 64 “Keystone Motel”

Ep. #64
ORIGINAL AIR DATE: Jul. 14th, 2015
SYNOPSIS: Garnet accompanies Steven and Greg to the Keystone state, but her inner conflicts causes her to split back into Ruby and Sapphire.

The fusion incident is still fresh in everyone’s mind. Pearl has spent the last few days trying to locate Peridot, hoping Garnet will trust her again. The latter is still not speaking to her. The tension is temporarily broken when Greg barges in with an announcement: he’s going on a road trip to a neighboring state (Keystone) to pick up some car wash brushes he ordered from a man on the internet. Steven is excited since it’ll be his first time staying at a motel, but even more excited when Greg tells him it’s right next to the “best diner in the world.” To everyone’s surprise, Garnet wants to tag along, too.

Garnet holds herself together – figuratively and literally – until they reach the motel. After Greg leaves to pick up his order, she splits herself back into Ruby and Sapphire. It seems the two have been arguing amongst each other for some time: Ruby is angry at Pearl and incredulous that Sapphire isn’t as offended. She doesn’t feel like forgiving Pearl at all while Sapphire thinks they should end the drama now so they can all move on. Ruby storms off in response. Poor Steven, he’s caught between a rock and a hard place.

Steven catches Ruby near the motel swimming pool. He invites her in so she can cool off. Ruby literally walks into the pool and paces back and forth, ranting about Sapphire and how they have to be the bigger Gem about this. Her frustrations trigger her fiery powers, causing the pool to reach boiling temperature. Steven can no longer swim, so he returns to his room only to be greeted with freezing cold air, courtesy of Sapphire. Steven tries to engage in conversation, suggesting that the two Gems talk it out, but Sapphire knows Ruby won’t. It’s alright, everything will eventually be fixed because she used her Future Vision to foresee it. That’s why she’s got everything under control, though the ice developing around her proves otherwise.

Greg returns with brushes – and pizza – in tow. Steven informs his father about Ruby and Sapphire, thinking they need to patch up. Greg tells him that Ruby and Sapphire just needs some space, but it’ll be better in the morning. After all, they’re going to the Best Diner Ever.

It does not get better the next day. Greg tries to lighten the mood during breakfast, but Ruby is still annoyed that Sapphire is acting “high and mighty” over this situation. Sapphire thinks Ruby is just being a big baby who’ll eventually get over it. It’s enough for Ruby to produce her gauntlet and smash the table over. That was the last straw. Steven drops his meal and storms off.

Ruby and Sapphire trail after him. Steven finally gives the two an earful. He was so happy when Garnet came along because he thought they’d have a fun road trip. Home’s been awful and now this mini-vacation has been a disaster zone, too. He can’t take it anymore and wonders if this is his fault somehow. Ruby and Sapphire quickly tells Steven that he’s fine and everything that’s transpired is on their hands. Sapphire realizes that in using her Future Vision, she ignores what is happening now. Of course things will get better, but it isn’t at the present time and for her to brush that off means invalidating other people’s feelings. Sapphire cries, upset she hurt Steven and Ruby like that. Ruby jumps in to comfort her and tells her she’s right; what she wanted was to stay mad instead of figuring out a solution. The two make up with cuddles and kisses, reverting back to Garnet. Vacationed out, the three head back home. There Garnet tells Pearl she’s not ready to speak with her, but that little interaction is enough for now.

So many shows are content to build a blossoming romance with all the trials and tribulations that come with it. Rarer is the series that digs into an already established couple and their personal problems. Couples argue and “Keystone Motel” intricately deal with this issue between Ruby and Sapphire’s conflicting viewpoints. What’s great about their discourse is that it doesn’t fall into a pit where their relationship is threatened for the sake of tension. Ruby and Sapphire eventually settled their differences because they mutually love and respect each other. Progress has been made, but the Crystal Gems aren’t out of the woodwork yet.

Steven Universe – Episode 65 “Onion Friend”

Ep. #65
ORIGINAL AIR DATE: Jul. 15th, 2015

SYNOPSIS: Amethyst visits an old friend who just so happens to be the mother of Onion! Now Steven has to spend time with that weird kid.Steven catches Amethyst in a sad mood. The usually energetic Gem is depressed and not even the offer of an empty can of cream cheese is enough to lift her spirits. Steven leaves her be so he can grab the perfect side snack for his lox bagel. He opens the cupboard to grab a bag of chips, except someone already got his grubby little paws on it: Onion. Somehow the kid snuck inside the house, nestled himself into the kitchen cupboard, stayed there for God knows how long, and is now running off with Steven’s bag of chips. What is with this kid?

Jamie The Mailman

STATUS: Secondary Character
FIRST APPEARANCE: “Cheeseburger Backpack”
VOICE ACTOR: Eugene Cordero

On the surface, Jamie is a humble mailman living in the sleepy town of Beach City. His only remarkable claim to fame is that he’s the only courier who delivers the mail to Steven’s house, if not the only one who knows where he lives! But Jamie is a dreamer and what he wants is in tandem with his larger-than-life personality. Jamie is an aspiring actor who hopes to make it big in Kansas City, the place to be in if you want to be a star.

Steven Universe – Episode 66 “Historical Friction”

Ep. #66
ORIGINAL AIR DATE: Jul. 16th, 2015
SYNOPSIS: Jamie puts on a theatrical play based on the man who discovered Beach City.Jamie informs Steven that he’s putting on a play at the local community theater. It’ll focus on William Dewey, the founder of Beach City and Mayor Dewey’s ancestor. Steven auditions for the play and since he’s the only one who bothered to volunteer, he’s given the eponymous role. This leaves Jamie to play everyone else, but he won’t let that deter him; he’ll make his first big production count! Since Mayor Dewey is the direct descendent of the town’s founder, he personally funded the play and wrote the script, but it badly whitewashes William Dewey as a man who is nothing less than perfect. Stuck with a slipshod budget and a bland story that offers no exciting conflict, Jamie protests for a better script, but Mayor Dewey won’t budge.

Steven shares Jamie’s disappointment and he eventually complains about it to Pearl. She reads the script herself and reacts incredulously at the heavy inaccuracies. After all, she did meet William Dewey face-to-face centuries ago and he was not the shining beacon Mayor Dewey is trying to foster. Pearl proceeds to doctor the writing. Steven presents the revised script to Jamie afterwards and the actor is overwhelmed at the real, human emotion behind it. Now this is a play worth doing: an engaging tale about a man who genuinely struggled to make a name for himself. Too bad Mayor Dewey is still funding the play, not to mention it goes beyond what his budget paid for. Steven encourages Jamie to keep moving forward regardless. Inspired, Jamie sets out to create a show for the ages!

Steven Universe – Episode 67 “Friend Ship”

Ep. #67
ORIGINAL AIR DATE: Jul. 17th, 2015
SYNOPSIS: Garnet and Pearl reach the tipping point of their relationship. They must hash it out in time to stop Peridot.

The Crystal Gems managed to locate Peridot again. The little green gremlin had been trying to rebuild the warp pad in the Galaxy Warp Hub. Pearl is too earnest in her attempts to capture Peridot and her lack of focus causes the latter to escape once again. Peridot does say something interesting before she departs: Earth has an “expiration date”, indicating that it’s living on buried time. Hmm…

Pearl’s trying to keep a stiff upper lip, hoping that by catching Peridot, it’ll end whatever awkwardness she and Garnet have been stuck with for some time. Hopefully soon, Steven and especially Amethyst is just about done with this nonsense. Using the escape pod, Pearl managed to rig it so they can locate Peridot anytime she uses a warp pad. With it, they find her next landing point somewhere in the heart of South America. Peridot has somehow locked herself inside an old Gem ship, a perfect place to corner her!

The minute the Crystal Gems arrive, Peridot traps them inside the ship. She had tricked them into coming so she could kill them all. Peridot uses the ship’s weapons and defense system against them; the Crystal Gems barely dodge in time. Peridot is at the end of a hallway, but a hasty Pearl only ends up stabbing a hologram of her. She’s beyond frustrated, tired of losing and tired of the guilt eating inside of her.
